[ He's kind of rusty on the written form of the Old Tongue, but Ranulf wanted to learn as much as he could as soon as possible. And for now he wanted to test a theory on the international nature of language comprehension here. If they could understand a language which was slowly fading out of use, then that would be better proof than anything. ]

I think it would be a little much to look for a common-point between us, but I'd still like to know what the places you were from are like. If you don't want to talk about it I understand! I'm sure there are better things to do than chat with a curious cat. Or you know, if you're from here you can say a little more about this place too. If I'm staying a while I might as well get to know this place better.

For me, well... I was born in the forested country of Gallia, on the continent of Tellius. We recently finished a big ol' war, and I don't want to bother you with the details. [ ~~Basically the world as they knew it almost ended but things worked out just fine~~. ] It looks like the continent's in good hands though, so I'm not too worried. See, I already left home not too long ago, so I'm prepared beforehand to not know what exactly is going on back there. I used to... y'know, do small favors. [ For the king, but let's not toot our own horn here. Not to mention all the hazards he's had to deal with. ] Met a lot of people. There really is no such thing as an average town! There are odd blokes everywhere if you look hard enough, and I mean that in a good way.

As it was I already am a bit of a traveler, actually. So on my part, I'll just consider this place an unplanned detour! Though I get if some others among you might not be so optimistic.

I'm supposed to be some kind of giant killer so I'll be in trouble if I don't.

[ Fortunately Ranulf was distracted a bit by the wait and only caught the "Does he actually have..." before missing out the rest of the message. Well, he could ask Owain about that later if he remembered to. ]

"Giant killer"? To do with your role, I presume? That doesn't sound friendly.

Yeah. Someone mentioned that I needed to find a beanstalk? I'm just hoping that one of us - you know, people not from here - isn't the giant I'm supposed to slay. I'm okay with being a daring hero! Bursting into flames from my might and my will! Defying evil! But I can't just kill someone who got assigned that role. But so far I haven't met a giant.

Yeah they told us to fill in spots for disappeared people, but for someone to get brought here just to get in a world of hurt at best and killed at worst sounds terrible. For your sake, it might be better to not meet the giant at all... But hey if he turns out to be disruptive to the peace, by all means take him down if he refuses to change his ways.

Meanwhile I know pretty much nothing about what I'm supposed to do. It's got something to do with boots though.

Maybe you gotta walk somewhere? Go on some kind of journey or just walk a lot.

Journeying huh? Well like I said that's not a lot different from what I was already doing. It'll be different not having a companion though.

I can go with you if you want company. I mean, if it's okay. I gotta make sure there's not a giant in the countryside anyway and it would be weird being on my own again after traveling with the Shepherds. And I'm pretty sure other people have the same problem. They're supposed to find a stick or a forest and don't know where to look.

[ ... Heh. ]

Hey why not? It'll be a good opportunity for me to learn about Ylisse, and for me to tell you all about Tellius. [ Which is probably exactly what Owain wants to hear. Especially stories about Ike. Hoo boy. ]

In that case, it wouldn't hurt for us to poke around for a bit more company too if we can find them. Who knows what kind of adventurous bunch are around in a place like this. But maybe we should wait after Christmas. Lamb told me about this "Santa" person who can deliver gifts all over the world in one night! If he shows, I want to see if he's on par with the rumors. [ ooc-ly it's because other RPers are likely not around during Christmas, but shhh. ]

He sounds impressive! A worthy man to seek out! I wonder if he shows up if we could get him to teach us how he does it? Just think about what you could do with that kind of ability!

[Shh indeed.]

Lamb said it's a trade secret, but there's got to be some small thing we can figure out! For all we know he's gotten a god's blessing of sort... [ He doesn't really want any extra power for himself, he really is just curious. ]

[ngl, he's mainly thinking that it would be pretty awesome to be able to go off on an adventure and then see his mom and dad and visit all of his friends and drop off gifts and then resume the adventure without actually having to walk back and forth. And...maybe show up randomly to be all, "Hoy, Brady of the Moistened Eyes, what troubles have you encou- are you crying already?" (Since that's probably how it would go and he knows it.)]

Probably. Maybe he's got some kind of bloodline power? You know, like the brand. Or maybe you don't know? Or maybe he is a god.

[ Ranulf wasn't very serious about finding a way to exploit it either, but if it really was possible he'd have good uses for that sort of thing. For one all those diplomatic visits wouldn't take as long, and he could hypothetically stop Skrimir from storming off almost getting himself killed... As it was, he was a cat that liked taking in the sights. But what is practically teleportation sure would be handy situationally. ]

After what I've seen, I wouldn't write it off. [ But as for that last sentence... ] Gods aren't always friendly though, so we best keep on his good side, eh?

That's probably a good idea. I mean, unless he's an evil god and he doesn't sound like an evil god so there's no reason to make him mad.

Gifting good people around the world definitely doesn't! I hope he doesn't have any enemies, because seriously what kind of lowlife would wreck efforts of giving for fun?

He probably does. I think he'd be opposed by...

By some dark and twisted figure carved from nightmare and shadows! Probably someone who has a desire to plunge the entire world into despair! And the only way Santa can defeat him is

1. By summoning the hopes and dreams of everyone worldwide and creating the ultimate weapon!

2. Or maybe [And while it's written as 'maybe' the way it was written - drawn out words and a slight flourish at the y - implied more of a drawn out word. Maaaaaaybe.] he has to become one with darkness to fight darkness? It's only after he's consumed by the shadows of his enemy that he manages to somehow emerge as Santa Shadowblade, a grim avenger.

[ Ranulf blinks, absorbing the details of the storyline the guy on the other journal was crafting. He held up his hand to his mouth, and even with some attempts at stifling it couldn't help but laugh aloud. Not in an exaggerated way, but rather like when a kid does something silly and cute. And Ranulf liked kids. He plays along, because why the heck not? ]

1. It'll take a massive force of evil to defeat this good! But to spice things up, surely... in the depths of where hope seems lost, the children chant! They believe in him! They'll stand by him, and know that he'll win! Moved on by the forces of wonder, he seizes victory!

2. Santa Shadowblade sounds intimidating...! Would that kind of end really be satisfying? Won't it change the giftgiving tradition? Or maybe it'll only change the sorts of gifts... Things vaguely nightmarish and frightening? Hopefully it doesn't urge people to begin hating him and try to hunt him down! He'd have become misunderstood... What a tragic end!

Well, Santa Shadowblade could become a force of virtue and justice once he gets control of his powers. To the good he brings gifts! To the wicked he brings some sort of ironic, yet ultimately fitting, punishment. This is after a few years of him waging a war with the forces of darkness and maybe after he accidentally slays one of his friends during his dark and lonely battle.
