No. It sounds like a warning to ignorance to me. The learned man used his intelligence to remain unrealistically optimistic and write only positive literature which wouldn't sell. However, the Shadow traveled the world and saw how cruel it could be. Using his own knowledge, he succeeded where the man failed.
